Hurricanes’ slim finals hopes remain alive after impressive eight-wicket win over struggling Renegades
Hobart Webber remains in the race to reach the WBBL final after beating Melbourne Renegades by eight wickets for their second consecutive win.
The Hurricanes bowlers were excellent on a traditionally good batting wicket at Melbourne’s Junction Oval on Sunday.
Heather Graham (3-12), Molly Strano (3-14) and Nicola Carey (3-24) restricted the Renegades to just 9-101 after the Hurricanes won the toss and elected to field.
The only way forward for the Renegades was West Indies superstar Hayley Matthews, who scored 39, while wicketkeeper Josephine Dooley (16) was the only other batsman to reach double figures.
Hurricanes had little trouble during the chase and reached the target with 14 balls to spare.
Opener Elyse Villani continued her stellar performance in the tournament with an unbeaten 46 runs, while Carey produced a brilliant all-round performance with an innings of 25 runs.
Hobart moved up to fifth place on the win, one point ahead of the Sydney Sixers with two games remaining.
The Renegades are at the bottom of the table with only two wins.
In Sunday’s second match, Melbourne Stars will face Brisbane Heat without captain Meg Lanning.
The former Australian captain, who recently retired from international cricket, withdrew from the match just hours before the toss.
In Lanning’s absence, young all-rounder Annabel Sutherland will captain the Stars.
