Steve Smith is famous for knowing where his off stump is, but the Australian’s sixth sense let him down during the World Cup final on Sunday evening.

During the seventh over of Australia’s run chase at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Indian fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah produced a slower off-cutter which beat Smith’s defense and hit his pads.

Umpire Richard Illingworth raised the scathing finger, and the New South Welshman was out for 4 (9) after a brief consultation with teammate Travis Head.

However, Head’s advice proved wrong. Hawkeye replays showed that the ball had hit Smith outside the line of off stump, meaning he would have been saved if he had sought a review.

Smith usually never thinks he is out. With the possible exception of teammate Marnus Labuschagne, no Australian cricketer has ruined more reviews than the 34-year-old. It so happens that once in the World Cup final he had wrongly chosen the review option.

“He will regret it,” former Indian wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik said in the commentary.

Former Australian all-rounder Shane Watson further said, “It broke my heart after seeing this.”

Australia, chasing 241 runs for victory and a sixth World Cup title, were reduced to 3-47 after Smith’s dismissal in the seventh over, leaving the middle order in trouble.

It has been a disappointing tournament for Smith, who has been far from his best throughout the World Cup. He averaged 33.55 with the bat in ten matches, passing fifty just twice, against the Netherlands and Bangladesh.
